DNS Configuration
1-minute read
Short definition
DNS configuration defines how domain names are translated into IP addresses and how traffic is routed to internet-facing services.
What it is
DNS records (such as A, CNAME, MX, TXT, and NS) control critical aspects of email delivery, website availability, and service routing. Misconfigured DNS can expose internal systems, enable phishing, break email security controls, or allow attackers to hijack traffic.
Why it matters
Weak DNS configuration can lead to domain takeover, spoofed emails, data exfiltration, or service disruption. DNS is a foundational layer of internet security - if it is misconfigured, even well-secured applications can be undermined.
How to reduce risk
- Regularly audit DNS records and remove unused entries
- Enforce DNSSEC where supported
- Properly configure SPF, DKIM, and DMARC for email security
- Monitor for unauthorized DNS changes
- Limit access to DNS management interfaces
